Reflecting on My First Year of Acupuncture Practice in the Scottish Borders
This July marks one year since I first opened my acupuncture practice to the public here in the Scottish Borders.
When I began this journey, I could never have imagined how many inspiring stories, breakthroughs, and connections this year would bring. It feels both humbling and uplifting to look back at all the transformations that have unfolded.
Today, I’d love to share some reflections on what this first year has meant to me—and to thank you for being part of it. As a small gesture of appreciation for your trust and support, I’m also offering a gift to celebrate this milestone together.
Taking the Leap
Starting my own practice felt like jumping off a cliff—leaving behind a steady job to create something new and uncertain. Finding the right space wasn’t easy, either. The first room I rented came with uncertainty about how long I could stay, which felt like shaky ground for such a big step.
But despite the challenges, I was fortunate to have wonderful friends spreading the word and invaluable support from Business Gateway. I lost count of how many times I reached out to them, anxious about how to make this work, how to run a business, or simply how to keep going when everything felt overwhelming.
While I had trained extensively in acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, running a business—with all the advertising, promotion, finance, branding, and social media—was a whole different learning curve. I hadn’t used social media much in years, so it was a fresh start in many ways.
Looking back now, I’m proud of how far we’ve come.
It has been an incredible privilege to witness how acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) have supported so many of you. In just one year, over 80 clients have come through my door, each bringing their own unique story, challenges, and hopes for healing.
People have sought help for a wide range of concerns, including:
• Stress and anxiety
• Neck and shoulder tension
• Lower back pain, hip pain, and sciatica
• Tennis elbow and other joint issues
• Migraines and headaches
• Fertility support and IVF
• Sinus congestion
• Dermatitis and eczema
• Numbness or tingling in the legs
• Bladder issues
Many clients have shared remarkable improvements—sometimes in areas where they had felt stuck or were losing hope.
Transformations That Inspire Me
Here are just a few examples of the transformations clients have experienced:
✅ A client who had struggled with regular migraines for years has found their migraine frequency reduced dramatically, allowing them to enjoy a fuller life and improved wellbeing.
✅ Multiple clients with lower back pain, hip issues, sciatica, shoulder pain, tennis elbow, numbness, or tingling have reported being completely free of pain or experiencing a dramatic reduction in symptoms, even in chronic and complex conditions.
✅ A client who came in with long-standing sinus issues has, for the time being, experienced full relief and no longer struggles with congestion.
✅ Many clients dealing with stress and anxiety have found noticeable relief—feeling calmer, more balanced, and better able to cope with daily life.
✅ Several clients with eczema and dermatitis have reported significant improvements or relief in their skin symptoms.
✅ Clients experiencing bladder issues have noticed improvements and greater confidence in their daily activities.
What I’ve Learned This Year
Running a practice is a journey in itself. Here are a few things I’ve learned in my first year:
The right people will find you. People who are ready, open, and in need of healing will find their way to acupuncture—I just need to stay steady and trust the process.
Self-care is essential in this work.
Supporting others also means looking after my own wellbeing so I can be present, grounded, and fully available to you.Healing is a partnership. Acupuncture is often only one part of the process. Many clients also explore diet changes, lifestyle adjustments, and other therapies. It’s your commitment and readiness for better health that makes the biggest difference.
In My Clients’ Words
Here are some kind words that have touched me deeply:
“Can’t wait till my next appointment. I’m so relaxed afterwards too.”
“I’ve struggled with anxiety. After the first session I felt less anxious & noticed an immediate, large improvement in migraine frequency.”
“I have had 3 treatments so far and each time I leave, I get better and better. I have been in pain with many issues for years and had basically lost all hope—not anymore.”
“I was in agony for months with tennis elbow. Someone said to try acupuncture. I was sceptical but gave it a try—4 sessions and I honestly wish I’d done it months ago. It’s not sore anymore.”
